The Best Gerber, SOG and Leatherman Multi Tools Review

Spread the love

Here is a review of the best Gerber, SOG and Leatherman multi tools for 2018

A multi-tool is a device that gives you several useful tools into one simple device that you can carry in your pocket or on your belt in a holster.

All multi tools start in a compact state with the handles folded together. When you pull the handles apart you gain access to the pliers (or scissors) and the rest of the tools that are contained in each handle.

A multi-tool can come in handy anywhere and in many ways. You can find uses for one at home, at work or when you are hiking or camping.

The different tools on a multi- tool can vary but they usually consist of

1- A pair of pliers, that may be either a needle nose or a flat nose variety, this the basis of the multi-tool. The pliers may have a pair of wire cutters and or wire strippers included with them.

2- 1 or 2 knives. One with a straight blade and one with a serrated blade.

3- Screwdrivers. One a Phillips head and two or three different sizes of flat heads.

4- A file.

5- A bottle opener and or a can opener.

6- A V cutter.

7- A lot of multi tools have the handle marked off into inches or centimeters so you can use it as a measuring device.

There are literally 1000s of multi-tools in the market today and you can find them anywhere. From a $10.00 pair at you local flea market to a $50.00 pair at your local big box store to over a $100.00 pair online.

For the purposes of this review i have decided to concentrate on three of the top multi tool makers in the world.

The Gerber Legendary Blades Company has been around for almost 80 years and has been making quality knives and multi tools since then in their factory in Portland, Oregon.

The Leatherman Tool Company invented the very first multi tool in 1983 and called it the “pocket survival tool.” It was invented to be a portable hand tool that had many functions built into it. They are also located in Portland, Oregon.

The SOG Specialty Knives and Tools Company first started producing quality knives for soldiers during the Vietnam War. SOG originally stood for “Study and Operation Group” and was made up of members of every branch of the armed services dedicated to giving our armed forces the tools that they need. Several decades later they started developing great quality multi tools.

Some people might say “you get what you pay for” when it comes to price. Which can be true. However, for this review I have found lower priced multi tools that are of a very good quality and value.

Sometimes it just depends on what you are using them for, how often you will need them and which type of tools you will use the most.

They can be kept in a drawer at home or the glove box in a car and just be used occasionally or they can be carried around with you, in your pocket or in a holster, and can be used all the time.

I have set certain standards for this multi tool review.

1- They must be a high quality multi tool that has usable tools in them.

2- All or the multi tools I review must get at least a 4 out of 5 star rating on Amazon. I think that having people who have actually used the multi tool and then took the time to give a review as to their experience makes a difference.

3- All of the multi tools must be eligible for Amazon Prime. That way if you are a member there is no shipping cost and you get two day delivery.

May I suggest that if you do buy a lot products from Amazon then you should become a Prime Member. It will save you money in the long run and there many other benefits as well.

After I review the different multi tools I will give you my recommendations on which ones I think are the best value.

I am an Amazon Affiliate in training. If you click on a link below and decide to purchase an item I do make a little bit of money, with no extra cost to you. I strive to give you the best reviews possible on the best products I can find.

  1. For some things a multi tool works for me, but usually the tools on the device are a bit small for what I want them for.  I give my wife my multi tool for a pair of scissors and I get the evil eye back.

I have to say there are some pretty impressive tools there for me to ponder so I will go back and read about them right now.

    1. Actually I have thought the same thing. If you have the right tool for the job around then use that. If it is not available then a multi tool sure comes in handy.

  2. These are really great tools, David. When you go back packing in the mountains, you have every tool you need to your disposal. I am living in Europe, and I am familiar with the Swiss Army knife. I just gave it as a present to my daughter who left home to live on her own. It’s a great present to give and to get!
