Best Compost Bins for 2018 Review

Probably the most important part of gardening is making sure your plants get the proper nutrients they need. For instance whether you grow vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers or cactus the better the nutrition your plant has the more it is going to flourish.

You can buy bags of fertilizer at your local garden center that will work okay to a greater or lesser degree. You need to realize that some of them are organic and some of them are a synthetic fertilizer. The synthetic fertilizers will probably contain ammonium phosphate that can be toxic to your plants and soil.

By far the best and cheapest way to get fertilizer for your plants is by composting. Rich compost contains all the nutrients your plants need. As a result you will end up growing larger, healthier plants.

Known as “Black Gold” compost contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium. It also contains the micro nutrient’s manganese, iron, copper and zinc. These are the basics any type of plant needs to flourish and grow.

Fallen leaves are the main ingredient in a compost pile. The further we move into fall the more your deciduous trees will lose their leaves. Gathering them up can be a lot of work so you might as well get something back for your efforts.

Try taking a look at part of your yard where you haven’t raked up leaves for a few years. Pull the leaves back with a rake and you will see a dark, rich colored soil that is actually compost. As a result of not raking them for a few years they will actually become the next top layer of “dirt.”

Instead of bagging them up and throwing them away or burning them you should just throw them into a compost bin.

Other things that can go into a compost bin are vegetable scraps, lawn clippings, dead plants, coffee grounds and tea bags. Basically anything organic that was grown in the ground.

However, it is not a good idea to add meat. It will attract flies who will lay maggots and it will smell really bad.

Something you can add to your compost bin is a bag of cow manure. It will help to speed up the composting process by adding its own bacteria. But do not worry it doesn’t smell like you think it will.

The last two ingredients are water and oxygen. They help to produce bacteria and microorganisms that in turn will decompose the organic matter faster.

The final step is turning the pile every so often, I would say at least once a week, to help speed up the process. The center of the pile will heat up and decompose faster than the edges will. By turning it the pile will breakdown more evenly.

There are basically two types of composters. One type that sits on the ground and has an open bottom to let worms and caterpillars in and the ability to whick up moisture from the ground. The other type sits off of the ground and has a handle so you can turn it easily.

There are kitchen counter top model compost bins which can hold a few items or you can make your own compost bins with a little bit of work. The quickest and easiest way to produce useable compost is with a compost bin. Here are some of the best compost bins or sometimes called “composters” I have found on Amazon.

Every compost bin in this review met certain criteria.

1- They all will have at least 4 out of 5 stars on Amazon. They have upped their standard for reviews making them more legitimate.

2- All of the compost bins must be eligible for Amazon prime or have free shipping. That way there is no extra cost to you.

Here are my recommendations for the best value compost bins in this review. (In no particular order.)

1– The Redmon Green Culture Compost Bin.

This is a large capacity well-made compost bin at a good price. Another plus is with no bottom it allows worms in. The one drawback is it is a little harder to turn the compost pile than the tumbler design.

2- Max works Garden Compost Bin Tumbler.

The tumbling design definitely makes it easier to turn over your compost. The two chambers and the quick turn around on making compost means you can have a steady source of nutrient rich compost almost all year.

3– Hot Frogs Compost Tumbler

Tumbling your compost every 2-3 days is the key to making compost fast. This has a fairly large capacity and is still very easy to tumble.

4- Spin Bin Composter

If you have a need to make a lot of compost at one time than this one is for you. Even though the 60 gallon capacity will make it heavy the design makes it easy to tumble.

The one drawback I see is that the weight of a full container might make it hard to move for you it around.

From the beginning gardeners to the professionals composting adds the proper nutrients every beginning garden needs to thrive.

This is a list of several different types of composters you can choose from that will suit your needs.
